Cervical Screening with HPV testing
We offer private cervical screening for women who would like a cervical health check for reassurance. Cervical screening looks for high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV), the virus associated with most cervical cell changes and cervical cancers. The sample is taken from the cervix in the same way as a standard smear test.
Option 1: Standard cervical screening (14 high-risk HPV types)
This test checks for 14 high-risk HPV types most commonly associated with cervical cell changes.
- If high-risk HPV is not detected, this is reassuring.
- If high-risk HPV is detected, cytology will be performed on the same sample to check for any abnormal cervical cell changes.
Option 2: Extended Cervical Screening (28 HPV subtypes)
This test checks for 28 HPV subtypes, including 19 high-risk and 9 low-risk types.
It provides more detailed information about the HPV subtypes present. High-risk types are associated with cervical cell changes, while low-risk types are more commonly linked to conditions such as genital warts and are not usually associated with cervical cancer.
If a high-risk HPV type is detected, cytology will be performed on the same sample.
What is cytology?
Cytology involves examining cells from the cervix under a microscope.
- HPV testing checks for the virus.
- Cytology checks the cervical cells.
Together, these tests help identify whether HPV has caused any early cell changes.
Important information
Private cervical screening is intended for routine screening and does not replace a medical assessment if you have symptoms.
Please book a Women’s Health appointment rather than a routine smear test if you have symptoms such as:
- bleeding after sex
- bleeding between periods
- bleeding after the menopause
- persistent pelvic pain
- unusual vaginal discharge
- new pain during sex
